A practical starting point for Canadian registered accounts, taxable investing and ETF distributions.
Tax-Free Savings Account
Contributions are not deductible. Qualifying investment growth and withdrawals are generally tax-free. Withdrawals restore contribution room on January 1 of the following calendar year, not immediately. Check personal CRA records and your own transactions before contributing.
Registered Retirement Savings Plan
Eligible contributions may reduce taxable income, subject to deduction room. Withdrawals are generally taxable. Consider marginal tax rates today and in retirement, withholding, spousal plans and the eventual RRIF conversion rules.
First Home Savings Account
An eligible first-time home buyer may make deductible contributions and qualifying tax-free withdrawals. Annual and lifetime participation limits and carryforward rules apply. Check eligibility, account opening and closing rules with CRA.
Registered Education Savings Plan
Contributions are not deductible; grants and investment growth can support education. Government incentives, contribution limits, beneficiary eligibility and withdrawal treatment vary.
Registered Retirement Income Fund
A common vehicle for converting RRSP assets to retirement income. Minimum annual withdrawals generally apply and withdrawals are typically taxable.
Taxable investment accounts
Interest, dividends, capital gains and foreign income may receive different Canadian tax treatment. Track adjusted cost base and reinvested distributions accurately.
Tax treatment of ETF distributions
Distributions may contain eligible dividends, foreign income, capital gains, other income or return of capital. Review issuer tax breakdowns and T3/T5 slips. Return of capital can adjust ACB.
Foreign dividend withholding
Withholding tax depends on the investment, account type, fund structure and treaties. U.S.-listed and Canadian-listed ETFs may differ; verify rather than assuming a blanket exemption.
Adjusted cost base and realized gains
Taxable accounts require careful tracking of ACB, reinvested distributions, commissions and dispositions. Capital-gains inclusion rules can change; use current CRA guidance.
Which investments belong in which account?
Asset location may affect after-tax results, but diversification, liquidity, costs, contribution room and simplicity often matter more than optimizing any single withholding tax.
Always verify current limits, eligibility and tax treatment at the source.
